Upward Bound provides academic support to high school students so they may complete high school, enroll in college, and successfully obtain a college degree. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Programs division, qualifying participants come from families who meet federal income guidelines, or are first-generation college students.
Participants must attend East Meck High School, Garinger High School, Independence High School, or Rocky River High School. Students may enter the program during their 9th or 10th grade years. 11th grade students may be eligible as well. Students must demonstrate the desire to attend college, and be the first generation in his/her family to go to college and/or come from a modest-income household. Students must also have academic needs as determined by an Upward Bound Academic Coordinator.
All services provided to Upward Bound students, including the six-week summer programs, trips, and tutoring services, are provided free of charge.
Upward Bound students must participate in weekly tutorials and multiple weekend activities/academies throughout the school year. Also, students are required to participate in the six-week summer program. The commitment to Upward Bound is from the time a student enters the program until he/she graduates high school.
All UB staff reviews applications on a regular basis, and accepts applications throughout the year. Sometimes we receive more applications than we have space and have to place eligible students on a waiting list for later admission
